How a series stays coherent across 3, 5 or 7 books
The hard problem is not writing a chapter — it is writing book 5 without contradicting book 1, and having the characters be different people by the end. Four things do that work:
- Character ladders. The plan fixes, per character, what they believe / what wounds them / what they can do / who they are to others at the end of every book. Each outline is held to reaching that rung, and the continuity pass flags anyone who stops changing.
- A thread ledger. Every planted setup is recorded with the book that plants it and the book contracted to pay it off. Nothing dangles past the last book.
- Versioned character cards. When a book finishes, a handoff pass rewrites every card to describe who that character is now — so book 5's prompts are not still describing who they were in book 1.
- A rolling world state. After every chapter a continuity pass updates the canonical "what is true right now" and flags anything that contradicts it.
